The ubo-aka is a "thumb piano" of the Igbo people of southeastern Nigeria. Our version of the instrument features a wooden soundboard (with cut-out handholds) mounted on a large calabash resonator. Traditionally metal cuffs are placed around each of the 9 keys to produce a slight "buzz" when the instrument is played. Because the wider spring steel tines didn't permit the use of cuffs, however, we've draped a length of metal chain across the key assembly.
