This gourd disc rattle was crafted by Pan-African Arts and is modeled on a type found widely in West Africa under a variety of names, including wasamba (Bamana people of Mali), wassahoumba (Susu people of Guinea), and lala or laala (the widespread Fulbe or Fula people.

Dimensions: 12" l., 3" w.

The instrument is played, singly or in pairs, by holding it in one hand and shaking it in an up-and-down motion so that the gourd discs slide along the wooden shaft. The sound produced is reminiscent of Spanish castanets. When not in play, the instrument functions as an item of functional art.
