Purchased new by me on 9th March 2002, this is my Tama Starclassic Performer EFX Fusion shell pack (Model SN428FS-LBM) in the stunning Mercury factory finish.

I’ve owned this kit from new and it has been my main professional kit for both touring and studio recording. It’s been incredibly reliable over the years and has always been one of those kits that engineers immediately love.

The 22” bass drum is simply phenomenal—huge, punchy and incredibly easy to record. It has real depth and power without becoming boomy, while the toms have all the warmth, attack and tuning range that made the Japanese-built Starclassic Performer series so highly regarded.

One feature I’m particularly pleased to be able to include is the original Tama factory drumheads. I kept them from new and have recently refitted them, giving the kit an authentic period-correct appearance that’s rarely seen on a 2002 Starclassic.

The Mercury finish remains in excellent condition, with the beautiful pearlescent swirl and depth that made these early Performer EFX kits so distinctive.

This is a genuine one-owner kit with documented provenance from new—something that’s becoming increasingly difficult to find over twenty years later.
