The Fostex TH910 is the next-generation flagship closed-back headphone from Fostex, advancing the legacy of the acclaimed TH900 series. Since its release in 2012, the TH900 series has been Fostex's flagship model, captivating many audio enthusiasts with its unique BioDyna driver's superb sound quality and the unparalleled texture of its beautiful lacquered housing. The TH910 inherits these charms while completely revamping everything from the driver and housing to the structure, evolving into the next generation. As the closed-back version (the open-back sibling being the TH919), it's focused on isolation and a more intimate presentation. Crafted in Japan with a solid hard maple housing finished in traditional Japanese Urushi lacquer, the TH910 is as much a work of art as a reference tool — uniting traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge acoustic engineering for a luxurious, warm, yet highly detailed closed-back listening experience.
Key elements of its design:
- Newly Developed 50mm BioDyna Driver The BioDyna driver, acclaimed for its high resolution and extremely smooth sound quality, has been significantly upgraded. A newly developed edge improves amplitude stability, enabling tight and well-defined low frequencies without excessive expansion, while suppressing unwanted resonance to eliminate muddiness and achieve a natural, smooth midrange. Its bio-cellulose diaphragm is driven by a powerful neodymium magnetic circuit.
- Closed-Back Isolation As the closed-back member of the flagship pair, the TH910 is designed for listeners who want to shut out the outside world and focus purely on the music — delivering a more intimate, focused presentation with strong isolation.
- Urushi-Lacquered Maple Housing The solid hard maple earcup housings carry a distinctive traditional Japanese Urushi lacquer finish, hand-applied by Sakamoto Otozo Shoten (founded 1900). The "foil pattern" finish uses black lacquer as a base combined with hand-applied silver foil smoked with sulphur, creating a shimmering, deliberately irregular effect — while the hard maple and hard lacquer combination avoids unwanted colouration, preserving solid, elastic bass and clean, extended treble.
- Lightweight Magnesium Construction Newly adopted magnesium alloy mechanical parts help reduce the weight of these headphones by 20% compared to aluminum components, for superb long-session comfort.
- Premium Materials Throughout The ergonomically designed ear pads use dual-layer low-resilience urethane and silk-protein synthetic leather, while the headband and cushion are finished in natural sheepskin leather, delivering an intentionally light clamp force for fatigue-free extended listening.
- High-Purity Detachable Cable The detachable 2 m cable is made from 7N-grade (99.99999%) high-purity OFC copper for optimal transmission, terminating in a gold-plated ¼" (6.3mm) plug, with 3.5mm connectors at the earcups (compatible with TH900 MK2 cables). An optional 4.4mm balanced cable (ET-TH4.4BL2Y) is available separately.
Reviewing the TH910, StereoLife noted that the combination of hard maple and hard lacquer is intended to avoid adding unwanted colouration — helping preserve solid, elastic bass and clean, well-extended treble without artificially emphasising any specific part of the spectrum — and framed it as the closed-back version for listeners who want to shut out the outside world and focus on the music.
