The Rupert Neve Designs 5045 Primary Source Enhancer is widely regarded as the world's most natural feedback reduction tool. This 2-channel, all-analog processor is exceptionally useful at reducing feedback without negatively impacting the sonic integrity of the source signal, effectively increasing the level a microphone can be raised before feedback occurs in a live sound environment by up to 20dB. With a simple, intuitive control set that generally requires minimal adjustment, it has become an indispensable fixture on the biggest stages, in houses of worship, broadcast studios, and any venue where feedback and background bleed are problematic. It is so trusted that FOH engineer Andy Meyer, who has worked with Justin Timberlake and Madonna, says that without the Primary Source Enhancer, he wouldn't be able to do his job.
Key elements of its design:
- 100% Analog, Non-Filtering Design Unlike conventional feedback fighters, the 5045 does not utilize filtering or digital processing to achieve its significant benefits. Built around Rupert Neve Designs' custom input and output transformers, its all-analog circuitry provides superb control and sonic performance without compromising the integrity of the source material.
- Intelligent Source Sensing The 5045 shares traits with a noise gate but operates on a different principle. It senses when someone is speaking or singing into the mic and allows the signal to pass through, and senses when the person has stopped talking or singing and reduces the gain appropriately, thus reducing the system's tendency to feed back.
- Threshold & Depth Control The Threshold sets the level at which the enhancer engages, while the "DEPTH" knob sets how much attenuation is applied after the signal falls below where the "THRESHOLD" is set. This lets you find the perfect balance between effect audibility and feedback reduction, without chopping off quietly spoken words.
- Flexible Time Constants & RMS/Peak Detection The "TIME CONSTANT" control mostly sets how quickly the attenuation occurs in the quiet sections between words or sentences, ranging from fast to slow. The RMS/PEAK push-button selects between RMS mode (a slower, averaged sidechain response) and PEAK mode, useful for detecting faster transient peaks and for creative dynamic envelope shaping.
- Effortless Setup A PROCESS ACTIVE LED indicates when the 5045 is actively affecting signal — i.e. when the input signal has overcome the enhancement threshold, making dialing in the unit fast and foolproof even in environments without a full-time engineer.
The 5045 is praised across the touring world for its transparency and reliability. FOH engineer Toby Francis, who has mixed for Kendrick Lamar, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Ariana Grande, calls it such a handy tool and runs several channels on vocals depending on where the artist is positioned on stage. Many engineers describe its effect on a vocal as comparable to the difference between talking to someone in a cathedral versus speaking with them in a living room — a dramatic improvement in the clarity of the voice.
