20" Paiste Signature 2260g Rough Ride 1991 Early 1st Generation Dark Jazz Ride Cymbal

Early Paiste Signature 20" Rough Ride from 1991, the second production year of the model.

At 2260g, this example sits at the lighter end of documented 20" Rough Rides. Cymbal Wiki lists a median weight of 2287g, with this cymbal only 20g above the lightest documented example.

It combines the Paiste stick sound with a complex dark wash, a layered bell and good crashability.

Early Paiste Rough Rides rarely appear on the used cymbal market. Since Rick Dior's in depth video on the model and Timothy Roberts' tribute to the Paiste Rough Ride brought renewed attention to these cymbals, early examples have become increasingly difficult to find.

The early first generation is characterized by deep golf ball sized hammer craters arranged in five concentric circles, combined with smaller organic hammer marks, a broad relatively flat bell and a flat profile.

This example dates from 1991 and carries the early six digit serial number.

The first generation was produced with more extensive handwork than the later version. Later Rough Rides have a different, less pronounced hammering pattern and a different construction.

A contemporary Modern Drummer review from 1989 described the Rough Ride as deep, dark and complex and compared its character to old K Zildjian cymbals. The model is also associated with players including Steve Jordan and Jim Keltner.

At 2260g, the stick remains defined, the bell is present, layered and dark, and the cymbal opens quickly when crashed without disappearing into the wash.
