Overview and introduction for this used Gibson Les Paul Standard Faded , from 2005 with a heritage cherry burst finish :- Gibson can be so annoying - They've acquired an historic legendary status that is the envy of all who followed - But equally they get so many things wrong, for one reason or another - Be it their haphazard quality control and attention to detail - Or the release of many 'questionable' new models - But when they get it right, we can all join in and offer a round of applause - 2004 and Gibson updated the LP Standard - The first time in over 40 years they offered the best selling burst finish, on a figured maple top, with more in the way of old school features- At last this was the production model that players wanted - Come 2005 and they extended this option with the releases of the same LP Standard, but with a thin, nitro satin, faded heritage cherry burst finish - Sadly it was only available for a short time - This LP is part of the original early run, with the traditional 'Swiss cheese weight relief' - Around 2006 Gibson changed the weight relief to the larger 'Chambered' format and ran with this option until the faded satin option was discontinued in 2008/9 - As such the original early run is the more popular optionFull details for this used LP Standard with a faded nitro satin burst finish : - Used example from 2005 - Easy to determine the date thanks to the 0 and 5 within the 8 digit serial number Pick up cavity markings indicate LP5 - indicates 50's neck profile - HS indicates heritage cherry sunburst finish - Info further supported by the pre check quality control tag that is included within the package - along with the appropriate manual TKL black Gibson case - all catches and handles are fine, as expectedWhole guitar weighs 9lbs and 10oz - Not the lightest, or indeed the heaviest LP you'll come across - But it isn't the later variation with the 'Chambered' weight relief AA grade figured maple top No grain filler - thin nitro satin finish on the mahogany body, neck and figured maple top 17 degree headstock angle Nickel hardware including Kluson Deluxe machine heads with the 'aged' tulip buttons - Plus vintage esq push in bushings - Note the original Gibson ABR bridge and tailpiece has been 'updated' with a similar Faber ABR vintage style bridge + light weight aluminium tailpiece Update and 'improved' 500K wiring loom inc bumble bee tone caps (original would be 300K and to many this is not the correct spec) Original Burst Bucker pick-ups have been replaced with a pair of Bare Knuckle Pete Green humbuckers Overall condition is good - Certainly not abused - The thin nitro finish will naturally 'age' quicker than a regular gloss finish - As such this LP, which is now a touch over 20 years old, has acquired some of thatsubtle 'played in' VOS character - No dings or grazes that are beyond subtle and to the top surface of the finish - Slight pick mark wear on the top E side, between the two humbuckers - Usual tarnish to the nickel hardware - Clean frets and no hint of any wear Re-strung with a set of 10-46 gauge strings and set-up with a sensible easy action Feel and playability :- Spec'd with the marginally larger 50's neck profile - The difference between the 50's and 60's profile isn't vast when you look at the actual dimensions - But amazing how different that subtle variations feel once you wrap your hands around the one piece mahogany neck - The thin nitro satin finish ensures you feel that 'played in' character - I've re-strung this LP with a set of 10-46 gauge strings and set it up with a fairly slinky action that responds to a light touch Tonal character : - Thanks to a pair of Bare Knuckle Pete Green humbuckers it is pretty obvious as to what we expect the tonal character to be - Yet listen to Gary and Peter and you can clearly hear the difference in tone that each playerdelivers - Maybe more to do with the levels of gain they each favour and of course the touch that each player brings to the table - But that highlights the fact that such pick ups are not a one trick pony - The classic 'Need your love so bad' out of phase tone is part of the package once both pick-ups are utilised together - Yet trim either vol pot a touch and then the 'louder' pick up will now take over and dominate the tone, as with any other LP - Select either neck or bridge pick up on its own and you'll hear the classic LP flavoured tone, from chilled, fat and smooth from the neck pick up, with more bite, crunch and grunt from the bridge pick up that sings and screams as required - The wiring loom has been professionally replaced with a set of 500K pots - As per original LP's and the Custom Shop Vintage Replicas - A better option in my opinion that offers more taper, hence emotional control, as you roll back the pots - As such, set up the amp/pedal with the level of gain you require, then roll the guitar pot down to 6/7 for a more chilled out cleaner voice - More akin to the PG voice - Then wind it back towards 10, for that turbo boost and more of that 'Still got the blues' voice favoured by GM
