Joe Duplantier is now one of the defining figures in modern metal. As guitarist, vocalist and true sonic architect of Gojira, he has developed an exceptionally personal approach to the instrument over the years — massive, precise, direct and yet remarkably expressive. His collaboration with ESP was therefore highly anticipated, and this JD-I perfectly translates that philosophy into an instrument.

ESP has created a guitar with an incredibly strong identity here, featuring an XJ offset silhouette specially reworked for Joe, immediately recognizable without feeling derivative. The result is both radical and elegant, while remaining perfectly consistent with the guitarist’s musical universe. The Silver Sunburst finish adds even more personality, with a sober yet particularly classy appearance.

Most importantly, however, the JD-I does not try to do too much. Joe Duplantier has always favored efficiency and this guitar follows exactly the same philosophy. A single DiMarzio JD Fortitude humbucker in the bridge position, a single volume control and a design entirely focused on playing: everything is geared towards delivering a direct, powerful and exceptionally articulate signal. It has that ability to produce a huge, aggressive tone while retaining enough definition for every note to remain perfectly intelligible, even with low tunings and high levels of gain.

The build quality lives up to ESP’s reputation, with a particularly serious choice of woods and construction. The roasted maple neck provides an excellent sense of stability and response, while the Macassar ebony fingerboard contributes to the guitar’s feeling of precision and speed. The Extra Jumbo stainless steel frets are also a particularly smart choice for an instrument designed for such an energetic playing style, offering an excellent feel under the fingers and outstanding durability.

What really stands out with this JD-I is its character. It is not trying to be a versatile guitar capable of doing everything: it fully embraces its personality and purpose. It responds instantly to your attack, handles heavy distortion effortlessly and delivers that combination of power, precision and bite that has become part of Joe Duplantier’s signature sound.
