The original P90-loaded 5th Avenue Kingpin was introduced at the 2009 NAMM show, quickly becoming one of the most popular hollow body guitars in the Godin line. In late 2024 Godin unveiled the 5th Avenue TL (Thin Line), a clever blend of the 5th Avenue and Montreal series that brings the Kingpin’s vintage-flavored voice to a slimmer, fully hollow body just 1.75" deep. The result is a Kingpin that is certain to expand the audience for this much-loved archtop.
Built entirely from Canadian Wild Cherry, the Kingpin TL retains the lively, woody character of the full-depth Kingpin, while its thinner body and smaller air chamber make it even more responsive to touch and playing dynamics. The slimmer profile gives up none of the full-range response we’ve come to expect from the Kingpin, and if anything we hear a little more low-end presence.
The P90 pickups are a perfect match for this guitar and have long been our favorite on the full-depth Kingpin as well. They deliver just the right amount of bite and clarity for pop, rock, blues and roots players, yet slide easily into jazzier territory with a twist of the tone knob (or a set of flatwound strings). The TOM-style bridge on a Graph Tech TUSQ base allows precise intonation adjustment, a smart choice on a thinner hollow body where intonation is more critical than on a deeper jazz box.
We’ve always loved the Kingpin, and the comfort and responsiveness of the TL make us love it even more. The Kingpin TL is a great addition to the line and is sure to bring more players into the Kingpin fold.
This is a Godin "SF" Factory Second guitar, which means a small cosmetic blemish was found during inspection (see photo). These blemishes are usually difficult to find without close inspection. SF guitars carry the full factory warranty, and you save some money. Photos are of the actual guitar.
