Marshall

JCM800 2204 – 1983

A superb example of a UK-built Marshall JCM800 2204 from 1983, delivering the unmistakable sound that defined hard rock and metal throughout the 1980s. The 50-watt Master Volume series remains one of the most sought-after Marshall circuits ever produced, offering the perfect balance between the aggression of a Super Lead and the practicality of a controllable master volume design.

This particular amplifier retains its original Drake transformers, including the desirable Drake 1202-324 mains transformer and Drake 784-139 output transformer. The amp is fitted with a matched set of Tung-Sol EL34B power valves and Tung-Sol 12AX7 preamp valves, all manufactured in Russia, providing excellent reliability and a strong, articulate British voice.

Tone

The 2204 is often considered the sweet spot of the JCM800 range. With its 50-watt output section, it delivers all the punch, aggression and harmonic richness of the larger 100-watt models, but with a slightly earlier power amp breakup and a touch more compression.

Expect tight low end, aggressive upper mids and the unmistakable Marshall roar that became the soundtrack to countless classic rock, NWOBHM and early metal records. From AC/DC-style crunch through to the heavier sounds of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and early Slayer, the 2204 remains one of the most versatile high-gain vintage Marshalls ever produced.

Roll back the guitar volume and you’ll find surprisingly dynamic clean and edge-of-breakup tones, while pushing the front end with a boost pedal unleashes the saturated lead sounds that have made the model legendary.
