The Yamaha DX7 is one of the most iconic and influential synthesizers of all time. Released in 1983, it became the definitive sound of 1980s pop music, famous for its crisp electric pianos, bright brass, and deep digital basses.
Unlike the analog synthesizers that preceded it, the DX7 used Frequency Modulation (FM) synthesis, a revolutionary digital technology developed by John Chowning at Stanford University.
Key Features & Impact:
- The Sound of the '80s: It powered massive hits by artists like Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, and A-Ha. Its "E. PIANO 1" preset is arguably the most recorded keyboard sound in history.
- Velocity and Aftertouch: It was one of the first commercially successful synths to feature a highly responsive, touch-sensitive 61-note keyboard, allowing for expressive playing.
- Complex Programming: FM synthesis was notoriously difficult to program compared to analog synths. Because it replaced physical knobs and sliders with a single data slider and membrane buttons, most musicians relied entirely on its factory presets.
How it Works (FM Synthesis): Instead of using traditional analog oscillators and filters, the DX7 uses 6 digital "operators" (sine wave oscillators). These operators are arranged in 32 different configurations called "algorithms."
- Carriers: Operators that you can hear directly.
- Modulators: Operators that modulate the frequency of the carriers to create complex, metallic, and harmonic overtones.
