Reluctantly offered for sale is my Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck.
Serial number A80113032 is a particularly desirable example.
It places this Dragon within the early production period, but beyond the very first few hundred units that experienced some initial production teething problems before Nakamichi introduced a number of running improvements. Throughout the Dragon’s production (1982–1993), Nakamichi continually refined the design, making examples from this period especially sought after.
The deck was professionally serviced by Wilkinson’s in October/November 2019. Unfortunately the service invoice was misplaced during a house move, but the work totalled approximately £550 and included:
* Replacement belts
* New idler tyres
* Full cleaning and lubrication
* General servicing and adjustment
Since then it has been carefully stored, lightly used and exceptionally well looked after. It remains remarkably original throughout, which is increasingly uncommon for a 44-year-old Dragon.
Mechanically it performs beautifully. The transport motor runs extremely quietly and smoothly, and playback is everything these legendary machines are renowned for. During the last month alone it has completed three separate five-hour listening sessions without a single issue. Paired with my Musical Fidelity A1000 amplifier it produces an expansive soundstage, exceptional detail and the warmth that made Nakamichi the benchmark for cassette reproduction. Even recordings made in the early 1990s sound wonderfully engaging.
Cosmetically, the deck presents extremely well. There are a few very light marks to the top cover consistent with careful ownership, along with a couple of tiny marks to the front left corner. The printed symbols on the power and eject buttons have faded with age and use, which is common on Dragons. All display illumination is functioning correctly.
It is a UK-specification model, so no step-down transformer is required. It is currently fitted with its original European two-pin plug and supplied with a UK three-pin adaptor.
Included with the sale are:
* Two original Nakamichi owner’s manuals (one purchased as a spare many years ago)
* Original Nakamichi Live Recording System Handbook
* Original Nakamichi fine-fibre cleaning cloth
Finding a Dragon in this level of original, well-maintained condition has become increasingly difficult. It is one of the most iconic cassette decks ever produced and remains highly desirable amongst collectors and serious hi-fi enthusiasts alike.
Collection is preferred due to the value and delicacy of the deck.
I may be able to offer personal delivery within approximately 150 km of my location—please contact me before purchasing to discuss this option.
Alternatively, I am happy to arrange shipment via a specialist courier, including Overland Express or an audiophile equipment delivery service with appropriate additional insurance if required.
Sensible offers will be considered. I appreciate the rarity of these machines, particularly examples that have been carefully maintained and remain so original.
