JMP 1959 Super Lead 100 – 1978
A superb 1978 Marshall JMP 1959 Super Lead 100, representing one of the most iconic and enduring amplifier circuits Marshall ever produced.
By the late 1970s, the 1959 Super Lead had evolved from its Plexi-era origins into the familiar metal-panel JMP format, but the fundamental recipe remained wonderfully simple: 100 watts, four inputs, two channels and no master volume. The result is the huge, immediate and incredibly dynamic Marshall sound that has underpinned generations of rock guitar.
This example is presented in very good condition for its age, retaining plenty of its original character and showing the kind of honest wear you'd expect from an amplifier approaching 50 years old.
The amplifier retains its original output transformer, while the mains transformer has previously been replaced with a quality Modulus replacement. We always prefer to be completely transparent about changes to vintage equipment, and this is reflected in both the description and pricing of the amplifier.
Tonally, it's everything you'd want from a good 100-watt Super Lead: enormous headroom, a firm and authoritative bottom end, aggressive upper mids and an exceptionally immediate response to the guitar. Turn it up and the clean punch progressively gives way to the rich, harmonically complex crunch that made the Super Lead one of the definitive sounds of rock guitar.
The two channels can also be jumpered, allowing the brighter Lead channel to be blended with the warmer Normal channel for a surprisingly broad range of sounds.

The 1959 Super Lead needs little introduction. It's one of the amplifiers that established the Marshall sound and remains one of the benchmarks for big, uncompromising British valve tone.
This is a particularly usable vintage example: it retains its original output transformer and has been thoroughly serviced, while the replacement Modulus mains transformer means it can be enjoyed as intended without pretending to be a completely untouched collector's piece.
