This is the Strad-a-Jerryous Tiger project. A fully ornamented, solid hollow body, maple / walnut, recreation of music's most important sculpted guitar. Modelled upon the proportions of baritone viola, it's parallel veneer pin-striping roll along the rounded edges. Hand cut inlays have more soul, than CNC assembly methods. Timeless in accuracy, honouring the legacy of Garcia's builder Doug Irwin.
Other builders create their Tigers with a flat slab of wood, and a kitchen cabinet router bit. Our eyes shall not be deceived when seeking the masterpiece. This is a guitar that can not be mass produced in a factory, nor found hanging on a store rack. A guitar is easy to provide, but compound curves involving concave,and convex reflective surfaces should be sculpted to an obsessed point of perfection.
Ethics of logging are respected when the same walnut, & maple trees grow in my yard. The orange wood in the neck is an abundant African hard wood called PADUK. I have worked with exotic COCOBOLO lumber..... but sorry, we will never pay a guy to walk into that forest with a chain saw, a donkey, and lots of greedy middle men. The wood has a wonderful smell, but it's skin irritation saw, and sanding dust, poisoned me, and my “Makita Theme-park”. Never again! same story with lacquer! Polyurethane is indestructible varnish on old house floors,classic violins, new guitars, and the fine furniture I create.
I was proud of my earlier “self taught, apprentice grade” 1996 Tiger guitars, and sold 3 in 2006 via ebay... One got a horrible review. It looked beautiful, but in hindsight should have gone into the wood stove. (The photos relieved; frets were slotted right, but the nut wasn't parallel.) Wall hanging guitars I built are described as such!... the rest of these sing like the angels!
Decades of research, techniques, and methods are combined to create a masterpiece. My favourite guitar part is cutting the brass nut from a piece of ingot, shaping , and adjusting it to become perfect.
