This is a 1999 Taylor AB3 acoustic bass. It has a spruce top over a very nicely figured maple back and sides, and it’s signed on the inside by Billy Sheehan. The Taylor and Klein StoryThe AB series came out of a four-year collaboration between Bob Taylor and luthier Steve Klein. The first prototypes were shown at the 1994 NAMM Show in Anaheim. Klein was known for unconventional guitar designs and had researched the guitarrón, the big Mexican mariachi bass. The goal was an acoustic bass that electric players would actually want to play. You can see Klein’s thinking in the soundhole. It isn’t in the center of the top. It sits up in the upper bout on the treble side, which leaves as much of the top free to vibrate as possible, and that’s a big part of where the low end comes from. The scale is a standard 34 inches, so it’ll feel familiar if you play electric. Why You Don’t See ManyTaylor built the AB line for only a few years. When they dropped it, they never brought it back. These were made in small numbers and don’t turn up for sale very often. How It Plays and SoundsIt plays extremely well. The action is low and the break angle at the saddle is great, so the strings drive the top the way they should. The Fishman pickup works great, so it’s ready to plug in for the stage or the studio.ConditionOverall the bass is in great shape. There are two things to point out:There’s a very slight lift right at the edge of the bridge. Only that edge has lifted. The bridge is firmly attached to the bass. There’s a small chip on the bridge where the low E string goes in. It’s very minor. At Joe’s Vintage Guitars, your satisfaction is our top priority.
