Some acoustic guitars become icons because their voice, appearance, and musical personality remain relevant long after their introduction, and the Gibson Hummingbird has followed exactly that path since debuting in 1960 as Gibson's first square-shoulder acoustic. Its combination of a Sitka spruce top, mahogany back and sides, and traditional scalloped X-bracing gives the Hummingbird Original a versatile foundation equally suited to driving open chords, accompanying a singer, or bringing definition to picked passages. Finished in the unmistakable Heritage Cherry Sunburst with the model's decorative Hummingbird pickguard, this model carries forward one of Gibson's most recognizable acoustic designs.
The Hummingbird's enduring appeal comes in part from a voice that can serve a remarkable range of players without losing its own identity. Its square-shoulder body is built for a full, balanced response, with the spruce top contributing clarity and articulation while the mahogany back and sides bring warmth and a strong fundamental character. That combination makes it particularly effective for singer-songwriters, rhythm guitarists, and recording musicians working in folk, country, Americana, rock, pop, roots, and acoustic arrangements. A Rounded mahogany neck, bound rosewood fingerboard, mother-of-pearl parallelogram inlays, gold Gotoh Keystone tuners, and gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish complete a playing experience and visual presentation rooted firmly in the Hummingbird tradition.
For amplified work, Gibson equips this Hummingbird Original with its exclusive Baggs HiFi DNA system, extending the guitar's acoustic personality to the stage and studio. Two lightweight, omnidirectional bridge-plate sensors each feed a dedicated custom-voiced Class A preamp before being blended into the final output, allowing the system to capture both string detail and the resonance of the guitar's soundboard. The result is designed to preserve dynamic nuance whether the guitar is played with a light fingerstyle touch or driven with assertive strumming, while offering gain-before-feedback comparable to an under-saddle system. Discreet soundhole-mounted volume and tone controls keep adjustment close at hand, giving this historic acoustic design a sophisticated amplification system suited to contemporary performance. Available now at Haggerty’s Music, this Hummingbird ships with a sturdy hardshell case.
