About this listing
Subway Guitars in Berkeley CA is once again here with the goods from the Golden Age. Today it is one of our favorite archtop guitars of all time, the Epiphone Triumph. It's one of our favorites because it is traditionally been among the least expensive carved top guitars available. It's nickname is "The Poor Man's L7". The cutaway Regent version was manufactured from 1948 to 1953. This model was made late in 1953, just a year or two before Epiphone closed down and was bought by GibsonAs mentioned, the Triumph had a carved top, which is the the best sounding and most time consuming method of constructing an archtop. The top is basically carved quite a bit like a violin to precise thicknesses determined by the tone of the instrument. It features a 17 3/8" wide body, single rounded cutaway, solid spruce top, solid maple back and sides, multiple bound top, two unbound f-holes with pointed corners, single ply white binding on the back edge of the body, elevated bound nitrocellulose tortoiseshell grain pickguard (this is the original pickguard which was deteriorating slightly and curling- we straightened it the best we could, and lacquered it, so the original pickguard is on it and functions properly, it is not cosmetically perfect, and it is missing the stylized 'E' that was glued on), mahogany neck, bound Brazilian rosewood fingerboard with pearl notched diamond inlays, bound peghead, pearl Epiphone logo and fat column peghead inlays, Epiphone Epsilon logo Sealfast tuners with New York buttons, Brazilian rosewood bridge, Frequensator tailpiece, very rare Natural finish, a vintage hard shell case that probably isn't original. This is a professional quality archtop guitar well suited for both rhythm and chord melody styles. The sound is exactly what you would like to hear from such a vintage Epiphone - rich tone with good cut. This is a versatile archtop which would also be a good candidate for a floating pickup installation. The guitar shows some minor lacquer wear from playing at the neck near the nut and at the lower bout where the arm goes over. About half of the binding had deteriorated to the point where it had fallen off. We carefully replaced the missing binding with new material, and used as much of the remaining binding as possible. It turned out fairly nice, but not 100% perfect. Also, there is a small patch of Orange discoloration on the back due to being in the case for too long There is a pinhole on the top shown in the picture, possibly from a failed pickup or pick guard install. All of these very minor cosmetic issues are shown in the pictures.Overall, the guitar is in exceptional shape for a piece of this age. Please note- due to the Brazilian rosewood fretboard, we will ship this guitar within the United States only.
