For sale or trade: 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom in Sunburst, serial number 300749, built in mid-1974.

A particularly interesting example due to its relatively low weight of approximately 4.3 kg. Constructively, it is very similar to a 1969 Les Paul Custom: three-piece mahogany neck, the same basic woods and original T-Top pickups, but with a few zeros less on the price tag and same tone.

The guitar has no breaks or repairs.

Tonally, this is a particularly good-sounding Custom. It has a very open, resonant voice with plenty of vintage mojo, far removed from the sometimes congested or muddy character associated with some 1970s Les Paul Customs. Excellent attack, definition and note separation throughout the entire register, while retaining the thick and powerful character of a good vintage Gibson.

The guitar has been professionally refretted with Jescar 51100 frets. It has just been set up and fully checked for the sale, with the frets recently polished.

Current setup:

  • Action: 1.3 mm on the high E / 1.6 mm on the low E
  • Neck relief: 0.006"
  • Strings: Ernie Ball 10–46

It plays like butter, with a very comfortable action and excellent response.

The guitar retains its original Gibson T-Top humbuckers with the black Patent No. 2 stickers, and the original factory solder joints are completely untouched.

Non-original parts:

  • Jescar 51100 frets
  • Faber aged ABR-1 bridge
  • Reproduction T Top pickup covers
  • Jack plate
  • Non-original nut; the original nut is included

The guitar shows some normal signs of use consistent with a vintage instrument from 1974.

It comes with the original 1974 Gibson Les Paul case and the original factory paperwork/documents. Finding a Les Paul Custom from this period with both its original period case and factory paperwork is quite uncommon and adds considerable interest to the package.

Trade / part-exchange possibilities are listed below. I may consider:

  • Gibson SG, Flying V, ES335
  • Gretsch 6131
  • Fender Stratocaster Vintage / Custom Shop
  • Vintage Marshall, or Silver Jubilee
  • Vintage Marshall cabinet fitted with original pre-Rola Celestion G12M Greenbacks

Cash adjustment possible in either direction depending on the equipment offered, its condition and market value.

Preferably sold or traded in person across Europe, although worldwide insured shipping can be discussed.
