Step back into the golden age of American fretted instruments with this beautiful Victoria “Guaranteed Perfect Scale” flatback mandolin, distributed by Buegeleisen & Jacobson (B.&J.), New York, one of the premier musical instrument wholesalers of the early twentieth century.

The original interior label reads:

Victoria
Guaranteed Perfect Scale
Best American Make
B. & J., New York

Believed to have been built in the early 1920s by one of B.&J.’s premier Chicago manufacturers, this mandolin features a solid spruce top paired with solid mahogany back and sides, producing the warm, dry, woody tone that has made these early American flatback mandolins increasingly desirable among collectors and players.

The original finish has matured into a beautiful rich amber-brown patina, complemented by ivoroid body binding, an oval soundhole, original cloud-style tailpiece, and original tuning machines. Nearly a century of careful use has given this instrument exceptional vintage character without diminishing its charm.

Condition

This mandolin remains in very good vintage condition for an instrument approaching 100 years old. It displays honest finish wear, light scratches, and age-appropriate dings that reflect decades of careful playing. The original celluloid tuner buttons exhibit the expected shrinkage and hairline cracking common to instruments of this era while retaining their vintage originality.

The top, back, and sides have developed a gorgeous natural patina, making this an especially attractive collector’s piece.
