1961 Ampeg B-15N Portaflex Blue Check All Tube Bass Amp - ALL ORIGINAL, JUST SERVICED.
Up for sale, a 1961 Ampeg B-15N in all-original condition, believed to be one of the last units built at the original Woodside, NY facility, as confirmed by the original inside tag. This isn't just a great vintage amp. This is a genuine Holy Grail of bass amplification.
The speaker is the original Jensen C15N, the earlier, warmer voice of the B-15 that most people have never actually heard in person. Jensen-equipped B-15s carry a slightly mellower, rounder character compared to the later CTS square cone units, and players who know, know. The tubes are all original Ampeg Sylvania glass throughout. In the Summer of 1966, this amp received a factory service at Ampeg's Linden, NJ facility, where tubes and capacitors were freshened.
The Amp Is All Original, with just the exception of the detachable dolly cart, which is a new period-correct retrofit from Fliptops.net, and the cabinet jack has been upgraded to a standard 1/4" plug, replacing the original (and not reliable) Amphenol connector and a 3 prong Power cord for security reasons. That second change is actually a great improvement, it means you can run this cabinet with any head, or run any cabinet from the amp, giving you far more flexibility than the original configuration ever allowed.
This is also the earlier narrow-frame grille version, which collectors specifically seek out. Aesthetically, the original "Random Flair Navy" tolex and grille are in remarkable shape overall, with only very minor wear at the bottom and sides, honest with consistent playwear from 65 years of existence. This is exactly the kind of piece serious collectors wait years for, enough honest wear to prove it lived a real life, but original and well-preserved enough to justify its value.
The B-15 is the most replicated, most modeled, most simulated bass amp in history, and for good reason. Countless iconic recordings were made through one of these. Unlike any amp modeler or digital device, this one will only increase in value over time. It belongs with a serious collector or the bass player who understands what they're looking at.
We ship professionally, split into two separate insured packages with proper pro packing materials. Shipping available at cost. Local pickup in LA also welcome. Early 1960s B-15N's in this condition simply do not come up. Don't let this one pass.
