Here you go—a true "pro-sumer" tape machine. Built when TEAC blurred the line between consumer and professional equipment, the X-1000R remains one of the most respected auto-reverse decks ever made.

Cosmetically, the deck is in excellent condition. The faceplate and head give it substantial, "battleship" appearance that perfectly captures the high-end audio aesthetic of the early 1980s. Built like a tank... and it weighs about as much as one.

Many experienced TEAC technicians actually prefer the X-1000R over its bigger brother, the X-2000R. While the latter received the marketing spotlight, the X-1000R is often regarded as the more robust design, with a superior head mounting system and chassis that are easier to service and align.

Mechanically, this machine is excellent. The interior is exceptionally clean, and the deck has undergone a comprehensive professional rebuild by the restorer I trust with all of my reel-to-reel machines. The restoration cost me $310, but it gives the next owner confidence that the machine is ready for decades of reliable service with proper care.

The restoration included:

• replacement of speed selector switch
• un-jamming the lift-up mechanism
• adjusting auto-stop
• cleaning all controls, demagnetizing heads

One detail collectors will appreciate: the original TEAC feet are still present. These are frequently cracked, missing altogether, or replaced with 3D-printed reproductions. Original, intact feet have become surprisingly difficult to find.

Unlike many sellers, I'm including the accessories needed to start enjoying the machine immediately. Included are:

• Original TEAC 10.5" take-up reel
• Brand-new NAB adapters
• Sony 10.5" metal reel with prerecorded tape (this is a lagniappe.. I can't vouch for the quality of the recording)

Every function has been tested and works properly, including recording, auto-reverse, and the dbx noise reduction system. Please see the video for a complete operational demonstration.

IMPORTANT NOTE: the electronic meter seems to have an issue. It works fine for about 30 minutes (as you can see in the video demo), but then stops. Fixing is is possible, but would require a board that can be sourced elsewhere. Given that most users are not likely to be bothered by it, I am leaving it 'as is'.

Please study the photographs carefully—they form part of the description. Also be sure to watch the video. For the demonstration, I connected an iPod to the inputs... because even a classic from the early '80s deserves a chance to visit the 21st century.

Perhaps you can find it listed elsewhere for less (and I have seen them go for MORE) - but, in my case, you would be getting a thoroughly checked-out and refreshed unit with no stories.

See the feedback; I don't buy items to flip - it's not a source of income for me (especially when you consider the Reverb fees), no matter what IRS would like to think. These are "rescues", something I enjoy doing.

IRS now charges "income tax" on Reverb sales -- so, expect the prices to go up to compensate.

It will go out well packed and fully insured - through UPS Ground/Reverb Safe Shipping - given the weight, it's not cheap but is WELL WORTH the surety it brings.
