I'm quite pleased with this A. Dubel labeled French Strad copy violin made in the early part of the 20th century and purchased by me from France. It is well made with inlaid purfling, full lining, and four corner blocking (see borescope photos). The lovely one-piece back is from a medium-flamed maple as are the ribs, neck, and scroll. The wood is intact all around with no crack repairs evident, present or past. My repair work was limited to the bottom rib/top/back joint at the saddle which had separated badly. This repair went very well albeit there is a bit of varnish bruising at the bottom rib joint as a result as well as a slight bulging at one of the bottom rib/top seams. This does not affect the performance of the instrument but I mention it for accuracy. In addition to the original paper label the violin has a Dubel shop branding at the button. There is playing wear evident all around as well as several small areas of varnish bruising primarily at the top. Otherwise, the violin has survived the past 100 years quite well and has a lovely original orange-brown varnish of the French style. In addition to the bottom rib repairs I also re-dressed what is presumably the original ebony fingerboard and fitted a new ebony saddle and endpin. I selected a lovely set of Crabwood fittings for the violin, lathe-fitted the brass olive pegs, and carved a fine maple bridge that in my opinion is quite lovely and suits the age/style of the instrument well. The violin is sold with the case she arrived in and will come to her new owner with a new student-grade brazilwood bow.
I chose Warchal Ametyst strings which are now my go to string for intermediate level instruments. This violins playing test did not disappoint. Her voice is deeply resonant and balanced across all strings with good power and bow response. Since tone evaluation is subjective, please listen to the included sound sample video and judge for yourself.
I am a lifelong woodworker from a family of musicians (yep, that's my son playing in the video:) with a love for these old instruments. I am not a storefront, and I do not charge high storefront prices for my work. As such, I do not wish to enter into returns, so please view the photos carefully, ask questions, and watch/listen to the video before purchasing. I only sell and ship to the lower 48 states.
*Sorry, I do not sell to shops. If you represent a shop or are a re-seller looking to flip this violin, please move on.
**Sorry, there is no international shipping; ships only to the lower 48 states.
