I have owned and loved this SG for nearly half of its 63 years on this earth. But I don’t play it much anymore so it’s time to sell it to someone who will own it, love it, and most importantly, play it as I have.

It sounds and plays like heaven. Assuming heaven was designed by Angus Young.

Serial number 126670, which is die-stamped on the back side of the headstock with no Made in USA stamp. This is consistent with a 1963 Gibson SG Special. I also have a very recent appraisal from Denver Folklore Center identifying the instrument as a 1963 SG Special.

This has been a working musician’s guitar for the past 30 years. And I assume that was the case for the previous owner. It's road-worn, with plenty of nicks and scratches as well as a few cracks (more about those below). But none of them affect its playability or stability. They just add a whole mess of character. Also, a number of modifications were made to the guitar, all before I owned it. I outline those below as well.

From the appraisal: "This guitar was manufactured by Gibson Guitars in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1963. It features a double-cutaway, cherry finish mahogany body, with a rosewood neck and a bound rosewood fretboard. The scale length is 24-1/2”, with a 1-11/16” nut width."

The pickups are the original Gibson P-90s. And they scream. This is one of the main reasons why you buy a vintage SG: for those old P-90s.

From the appraisal:

"The original Kluson tuners have been replaced with closed Schaller tuners. Similarly, the original volume and tone knobs have been replaced. One of the original CTS tone pots has been replaced with a comparable 500K Allparts pot. The original Tune-o-matic bridge seems to have been replaced with a newer model, leaving a visible footprint.

"There is substantial playwear on the neck, and moderate wear on the front and back of the instrument. There appears to be impact damage on the lower bout, extending from the pickup jack to the top of the wiring cavity, and the finish has chipped away near the jack. The crack does not go all the way through the wood, and is likely stable at this point. There are also deep gouges near the heel, although these appear unrelated to the impact damage. All the pickup positions work, although there is some scratchiness in the pots."
