J.W. Jenkins Sons Music Co. 3x15.5-inch Solid 1-ply Maple Snare Drum, 1920s

DESCRIPTION

This is a very cool 3-inch deep x 15.5-inch diameter solid 1-ply maple snare drum that recently came into our shop on trade. We are not really in a position to acquire and tuck calfskin heads, but for the vintage drum collector who understands and is able to complete this process, this drum would make a fantastic project!

Here's what we know based on close inspection and interior labeling:

• The drum was made by The Great Band Instrument House of Kansas City, Missouri, for the J.W. Jenkins' Sons Music Company, presumably in the 1920s.
• The shell is solid 1-ply maple with reinforcement rings and an outer veneer of birdseye maple, as well as solid birdseye maple hoops. The shell is in remarkably good condition for its age. There are no significant dings, no significant ply separation, no signs of moisture damage, etc.
• The drum's depth is 3 inches. Diameter is 15.5 inches. The drum requires custom calfskin heads as there are currently no synthetic options on the market that will fit this diameter.
• The 1-ply flesh hoops (necessary to tuck the calfskin heads) appear to be brand-new and unused. They are not original to the drum.
• There are eight T-handle tension rods with clips. All show signs of age, including rust, discoloration, and some bent spots. That said, all eight seem to be fully functional.
• There is a an olive green adjustable strap and one chrome mounting clip.
• There are nylon rope snare "wires" with an attached strainer and leather butt end.
• The era-correct case shows wear (missing handle, separated wood in spots, loose vinyl in spots), but it still closes and latches as it should.
