The Details

The E-mu Planet Phatt is far more than a simple ROMpler. Designed specifically for hip-hop, swingbeat, trip-hop and acid jazz production, it combines a vast sound library with deep synthesis and performance tools. Inside lurk huge basses, crusty analogue-style leads, lush pads, vinyl crackle, scratches, funky guitar licks and punchy drums that defined countless productions of the era. Dominic Hawken of Sound On Sound described it as “Phatt with a capital F”, praising its “big ballsy bass sounds and summery Moog-style leads”.

Its powerful Z-Plane filtering system allows sounds to morph dynamically over time, giving the Planet Phatt a surprisingly analogue personality for a digital rack synth. Filters can be layered, cascaded and modulated in real time, while modulation routing, MIDI SysEx control and editable parameters such as reverse playback, start point and delay time provide serious sound-design depth.

The onboard Beats section includes 100 editable MIDI-based drum grooves with tempo sync and E-mu’s famous X-Factor feature, which reshuffles drum sounds to create fresh variations and breakdowns without changing timing. Unlike sampled loops, these grooves remain pitch-correct at any tempo, making the Planet Phatt a superb songwriting and live performance companion.
