Vintage 1951–1955 Leedy & Ludwig 29" Concert / Orchestral Bass Drum – Elkhart, Indiana

Mahogany Shell • Maple Hoops • Fully Functional Barn Find

This is a true giant from the short-lived Leedy & Ludwig era — one of the rarest and most impressive bass drums you’ll ever see!~

Specs & Details:

• Brand: Leedy & Ludwig (official merged line 1951–1955)

• Size: Approximately 29" diameter × 16¾" depth (just shy of 29" — an oversized concert model)

• Shell: 3-ply mahogany with reinforcing rings — warm, deep, thunderous tone

• Hoops: Solid maple wooden dual-tension hoops (original and period-correct)

• Hardware: All-original chrome-plated T-handle tension rods and counterhoops — smooth, solid, and still 100% functional after 70+ years

• Badge: Classic oval “Leedy & Ludwig • Elkhart IND. U.S.A.” — confirms exact 1950–1955 production window.

Condition:

Barn-find in the NW Oklahoma Panhandle, stored wrapped and protected like a treasured family heirloom. The shell is solid with beautiful mahogany grain. Hardware shows honest vintage patina but no corrosion or rust that is either excessive or inhibits functionality. No replacements. All faucet tuners function wonderfully. Heads seat perfectly and the drum tunes easily with massive projection. This thing is a beast — still gig-ready or ready to display as a showpiece. No cracks, no splits, no issues.

Original Purpose & Why It’s Special:

These oversized 28–30" concert bass drums were built for theater pits, symphony orchestras, marching bands, and big-stage productions. The deep shell and huge diameter deliver that room-shaking low-end boom you simply can’t get from modern kits.
They are extremely scarce today — especially in this pristine, all-original condition.

Perfect For:

• Vintage drum collectors & restorers

• Orchestral / theater / marching-band historians

• Anyone who wants a massive, authentic 1950s American-made bass drum that still plays like new

This is a genuine piece of Leedy & Ludwig / Elkhart history and one of the largest, best-preserved examples you’ll find. Don’t miss your chance — these giants don’t come around often.
