Glensound BBC MX6 Mixer + 6-Ch Sidecar = 12 Channels Total, Ex-BBC S8/159
Built to a specification, not a price. Vintage ex-BBC Glensound MX6 mixer 6ch with 6ch sidecar. It came from BBC London OBs. Sidecar comes with a metal flight case and umbilical.
It has 12 x 936c mic channels, with transformer balanced mic inputs, phantom power, phase reverse and 45db pad. Proper, musical EQ on each channel, treble, semi parametric mid & a pultec type bottom end, where you can use the filter to slope down the bass from 20 or 220 Hz (7 positions between) & then use the bass boost to push it up, creating a hole in the lower mid.. These mic channels are capable of providing ample amounts of gain if you have ribbon mics etc..
The channels, mix and Aux 1 outputs are via P&G conducted plastic, linear faders, Aux 2 and the Clean Feed outputs are via rotary pots. There are 2 aux sends per channel (labelled misc 1 and 2), switchable between pre-EQ, pre- or post-fader.
Each channel has 2 insert points on bantam jacks (one pre fader, one post fader). These can be used as direct outs, allowing you to use this mixer as a fantastic sounding front end for your DAW.
The master bus has a built in compressor (which can be bypassed if not needed). Left and right channels can be linked or unlinked. Release time switchable fast/slow. Threshold switchable +4/-4.
The desk will output left and right channels (on male XLRs - BBC didn't want external kit plugged in or out) and also a mono channel at the same time. You can also patch straight into the compressor (via bantem jacks) allowing you to just use this unit as a compressor if desired. To the right of the master channel, there is metering, tape sends and a cue bus with headphone output. Lots of redundant telephone gubbins which you might use to run some of your operation.
The XLR headphone outputs are split feed - wiring diagram via Canford. This was so you could plug headphones into a regular GPO patchbay to check signals but is not usual outside the BBC. I seem to recall the main headphone socket is B gauge but normally wired.
A manual in pdf and print will be supplied. Reason for selling - don't need 2 sets of the same equipment!
All in all this is an incredible sounding vintage mixer, with great mic pres, very flexible routing options, a great stereo (and mono) bus and a stereo compressor. All the channels work properly, there are no crackly pots or faders. This thing is incredibly solidly built (as with most BBC stuff) and is designed to last.
Local pickup welcome. Delivery by man and van, at buyer's cost and risk, can be arranged - please message me your postcode and I will get a quote before you order. Alternatively we could drive up to 40 miles from Bristol to exchange.
