The kamale ngoni (lit. "young man's ngoni" in Bamanankan, Julakan, and Maninkakan) is found among the Mande-speaking peoples of West Africa. Virtually identical to the donso ngoni ("hunter's harp"), from which it is derived, the kamale ngoni differs from that instrument in that it typically has more strings (from six to as many as 12) and is employed in purely musical contexts.
My version has 10 monofilament strings, whose pitch can be changed using the metal guitar tuners.
Dimensions: 41" l. x 13 h. x 12" gourd diam.
The midsection of the neck is embellished with cowrie shells and trade beads.
The following YouTube videos depict the instrument in play: "Kamele N'goni Beginner's Lesson"; Kamele Ngoni"; "Mamadou Sidibe Kamele Ngoni"; "Kamele N'goni Mali"; "Kamele Ngoni Beginners lesson by Alex Wielemans"; "Cours de Kamele n'goni Ouagadougou."
