VINTAGE 1941 Ludwig & Ludwig Top Hat & Cane 2-Piece Snare and Bass Drum Outfit
- Details & Notes: Heart be still. This kit is the real deal. The highly coveted Top Hat and Cane Ludwig & Ludwig, only produced for two years between 1940 and 1941. Minty clean condition with this kit. Original wrap is near flawless with the very minor exception of a very minor scratch here of there, which we have done the best to document as we could. These drums were purchased from the fabled shop of Charlie Donnelly, Charlie Donnelly's Drum Centre of Newington Connecticut. To many, Charlie was considered the original vintage drum source when it came to both buying and information. Charlie had a tendency to repaint interiors of drums, and it appears that the snare drum interior may have received his touch. The bass drum interior looks original to us. Edges are clean, and the drums tune like a charm, easily taking both a high tuning and a more at home low tuning. Seams are in incredible shape on both drums. All hardware is original and clean, though there are signs of age such as a slight bit of bass drum claw pitting, and a little loss of luster. Wrap is even in hue and color, and is very vibrant. Hardware is completely original, and fully functional. The bass drum hoops show areas of minor wear from an attachment or pedal being used, but over all are in extraordinary shape. Drum heads are not original, and are Remo. This listing is for just the snare drum, and bass drum. As far as we can tell through the history and documentation of this kit, there were never additional toms and the outfit was sold as a two piece. This kit comes from an esteemed collection, and was featured in both the March/April 1995 and July/August 1996 issues of Not So Modern Drummer magazine. Providence of the set is with us and included with the sale of this wonderful piece of drumming history.
