About This Listing

This 1979 Gibson Les Paul Custom has never let me down. It is a dialed in professional instrument. Right before this guitar found me, it was masterfully refretted by Rick Cremer of Cremer Guitarworks. Normally a refret would be something I turn my head at but on a 1979 Les Paul Custom, with it's flatter factory spec frets, it is a welcomed upgrade. This guitar plays and sounds like a dream. Bends and vibrato are effortless. The pickups are simply amazing. The notes are always there. It is confidence inspiring. The 50’s style wiring allows for a full dynamic range and tonal pallette. The pickups are special doublewhite "Frampton Comes Alive Humbuckers" made to celebrate master winder Maricela Juarez' 40th Anniversary of working with Seymour Duncan. They were custom ordered through Rick Cremer as the authorized dealer. Not only are these pickups sonically inspiring and incredible, they are signed by MJ and the legendary Peter Frampton himself! The pickup covers are Aged PAF replicas that came from Jimmy Wallace and look just right to match the patina of the original hardware. And as mentioned, it is completed with proper 50's spec wiring using "VIP Potentiometers", replicating vintage Centralab taper, and hand selected vintage NOS Sprague tone caps.

The 1979 model year for the Gibson Les Paul Custom has always been my favorite. The body is one-piece mahogany with a 3-piece maple top. The neck is also 3-piece maple with an ebony fretboard. The mother of pearl inlays are gorgeous and the headstock is forever iconic. The Black Beauty!

The neck has been played in to perfection resulting in the best Les Paul Custom I've ever picked up. It is laser straight with a fully adjustable truss-rod. The weight of the guitar, a balanced 10lbs even. The overall condition of this Black Beauty is exceptional for it's age and how many hours have been put into playing it. There is a scratch on the bottom side of the neck near the headstock which can seem off-putting but is not felt nor noticeable unless pointed out. I've had the neck inspected and it has been determined to be solid and simply just a scratch. Under blacklight you'll see there are no headstock repairs or touch-ups on the guitar. The clear coat is holding up well although you can see the neck is played and worn in. That is because this maple neck is carved to perfection. The truss rod nut shows a full life left. The hardware (minus pickup covers/strap pins) is original which includes the following; pickup rings, switch, switch tip, jackplate, screws, tuning machines, bridge, tailpiece, knobs, truss rod cover, and back plates.

This Les Paul Custom will ship safely in its somewhat rare aftermarket black hardshell case and comes with a very cool ACE "Greenwich" strap and the Schaller gold locking strap pins. Also included in the case is the original nut and box for the Peter Frampton/MJ humbuckers.

Product Overview
Like the Les Paul Standard, the Les Paul Custom was replaced with the SG body style at the end of 1960. The original Les Paul and Les Paul Custom were not brought back until 1968. Upon its reintroduction, the Les Paul Custom differed from those of the '50s in number of ways: the headstock was a slightly steeper angle, the control cavity in the body was cut in a different manner, and the neck tennon was longer. Starting in 1969, the Custom also adopted a multi-ply body construction with a Maple top like the Les Standard, where the original Les Paul Custom used an all Mahogany body. Other changes include the introduction of a neck valute and a 'Made in USA' stamp on the back of the headstock.

Years of Production:
1953 - 1960 (switched to SG body), 1968 - present

Body Style: Single cutaway solidbody

Unique to this Year: 1969 is a very transitional year for the Custom which accounts for a great deal variation of values within the year. In 1969, there are examples with single-piece bodies instead of the multi-ply body, no neck valute, and no 'made in USA' stamp that fetch substantially higher resale prices than those with these elements.

Wood Composition: Mahogany body, Maple top, Mahogany or Maple neck, Ebony fingerboard

Design Elements:  Two humbucker pickups, block inlays, Kluson deluxe tuners, four control knobs, three-way pickup selector, black pickguard, bound fingerboard, stopbar tailpiece and Tune-o-matic bridge, gold hardware, headstock inlay

Finish Specifications: All standard Les Paul Customs from 1969 feature an Ebony finish.

Notable Les Paul Players: Jimmy Page, Slash, Neil Young, Alex Lifeson, Pete Townshend
