About This Listing

We are one of the only facilities in the Pacific NorthWest that buys, sells and restores reel to reel tape decks. We have over 35 years experience working on these units, and have the tools and test equipment to properly align and bring these decks to life.
We use MRL calibration tapes, and are dealers for ATR tape. We work on everything from mono tube machines to 2" 24 track studio decks. We are reeltoreeltech dot com!
We stock many types of ATR tape from 7" reels to 2", in several formulations. We have about 350 decks in stock at all times. If you haven't yet checked out our website, please do so. Under the 'about us' tab we have a bunch of articles regarding the 'great barn finds' that we've come across this year, netting us well over 100 decks and tons of parts.

Here is an excellent condition 1" 16 track multitrack deck, the Tascam MS-16. It's a real workhorse of a unit, and based on the popular and reliable Tascam 58, the popular top of the line 1/2" 8 track that Tascam made at the same time as this MS-16. We got this deck in with a bunch of others from a fellow that was in the broadcasting industry for years. He was downsizing, so we picked up all his reel to reels, ranging from 1/4" to 2".

This is the 15 IPS version, and it has XLR and RCA ins and outs.

This Tascam needed the typical regular maintenance needed by these decks, and we did some extras to maintain long term reliability. The deck ran fine, but it needed some tweaking and cleaning of the controls to be 100%. We did the following work:

-replaced all 32 record/play relays with sealed units. The non-sealed relays fail over time, causing intermittent and dead channels.
-replaced both the rubber tension idler as well as the pinch roller rubber with work done by Terry's Rubber Rollers.

-replaced several dead function indicator bulbs on the transport, specifically the record, play and stop buttons.

-several channels were a mile out of calibration, so we set each channel up for +3db, and for ATR Mastertape.

-aligned the tape transport and tape path to spec. The tape falls right in the middle of the reel, and the tape doesn't scrape the reel, as we see with many multitracks that come into our shop.

-replaced a defective chip in the remote, that was causing channel 16 to stick on the repro head, rather than switching to the sync head when selected.

-Test run the deck for 12 hours to ensure long term reliability.
-test all channels with and without dbx noise reduction, all channels are solid as a rock.

The first picture is of channels 1 and 16, then 2 and 15, etc.

The heads show a bit of wear, however there's lots of meat left on these, and the deck is good for many 100s of hours of recording. There's no channel dropout on channels 1 and 16, which generally fail first once the head gets down to a critical wear point.
Each channel as a bass compensation control, allowing adjustment of the nice 3db bass bump at around 50Hz, bringing a great sound to the bass guitar or kick drum. You do need the proper equipment to adjust the controls under the covers!
The deck has both XLR and RCA inputs and outputs, at +3 and -10db respectively, for easy connection to any and all equipment and mixers. The pitch control has been tested, and is handy when your singer can't quite hit the high notes. Slow the deck down along with lowering the pitch, and he'll nail the vocals, even on a bad day.

Included with the deck is a 10" takeup reel, the deck, the stand, and the dbx unit. The stand is nice and compact, so you can easily fit the deck even into the smallest home studio for that warm tape sound. We are ATR dealers, and can send up to 4 rolls of 1" tape with the deck at no extra shipping charge, just pay for the tape itself.

Here's the important part regarding shipping: Local pickup in Vancouver BC is encouraged, and done at no charge. We will deliver to Blaine Wa. 98230 at no charge. We're happy to demo the deck for you. If you're anywhere in the PNW, come and audition the deck and ask questions.

Elsewhere, the deck is too heavy to go by courier or USPS, it has to be strapped onto a pallet and sent via truck. We know how to pack these decks, on a moving blanket to absorb shock, and bubble and shrink wrapped. Shipping to a residence is about $100 more than you picking up at the local truck dock. Pickup is at a local Forward Air dock near you, and has to be done within 48 hours of the deck arriving (they will call you).
A residential delivery is available, but adds about $100 to the shipping price, and is not included in this listing.
Note that we do have a Tascam AQ-65 autolocator as well (not shown), and we can sell that at an additional $1000 with this deck.
