Defil made guitars and basses in Lubin, Poland from the 1960s to the 1990s. This Baston bass was most likely built in 1975 and came to me complete in very nice cosmetic condition needing no structural repairs, and includes the original vanilla colored vinyl gig bag.
The beech neck has a square-ish carve at 32” scale, no trussrod and originally had a flat fretboard that I reshaped to a 12" radius and gave it new Jescar 47104 frets. The tuners are original and still work well (tho they turn backwards), as is the original bridge and trapeze, the action is low and tight, and it plays easy.
The body is also made of beech with the original painted finish in very good condition. The original pickguard was cracked with 3 slider pots and a mysterious non-functioning preamp buried inside the body. However the passive single coil pickups at 5.6k each work and sound great without the fancy - and extinct- electronics, so, I made a new white pickguard and fit it with new pots and a 3-way switch leading out to a standard 1/4" jack
What does it sound like? (Watch the dang video!) It sounds clear, rich and full, it’s a modern and very pleasant sounding bass without a hint of being wimpy.
This is about as nice of a playing and sounding Defil Baston as you are going to find, and most likely much better than it was when new. It’s not a joke or a toy; it’s a nice solid bass.
