This offering was crafted by Pan-African Arts and features 10 cold-forged bicycle spoke keys mounted on a rectangular wooden box resonator. Around the keys are metal cuffs that produce a rattling sound when the instrument is played.
Dimensions: 8" l., 3 3/4" w.
Like some traditional models, our version of the likembe features two sound holes -- one at the bottom of the instrument, and another at the wide end. Both sound holes can be used to produce a vibrato effect. This is achieved by alternately closing and opening the bottom hole with a finger and by alternately pressing the wide end of the instrument against, and away from, the stomach.
