Now here's an instrument that'll add the sizzle to music-making sessions. It may be played either by holding it by the handle and shaking or twirling it or by holding the pods in cupped hands and tapping them with the fingers. Either way, the sound produced is crisp and carries well in ensemble settings as well as in mobile processions such as Bahamian junkanoo parades or New Orleans second lines.
This rattle is found in Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Cote d'Ivoire, and neighboring West African countries. It features 24 seed pod strikers (called "agba" by Nigeria's Yoruba people) which are attached by cordage to a wooden handle.
