J.G.Richards Snare..Vintage

This is a snare I purchased years ago, a J.G.Richards, Amber Maple Steam Bent snare. A beautifully constructed snare from the 1920`s I believe. The information I received when I purchased this drum was that it was a commissioned build for Frank Tapley, a medic from the 1st World War...

The snare has 20 lugs batter side and snare side...The strainer is not original to the drum and I`m not sure what kind of snare buttplate would have been used..There are holes in the bottom snare side rim that held some buttplate assembly at some time, I am not sure what that assembly would be...

There is a crack in the snare side calf skin running along the rim at the junction where the snares travel up to the strainer..The crack is about 3/4" and had tape applied to hold it from cracking any further prior to my purchase...The batter side calf is in great shape and has the original owner Tapley`s name on the calf, beautifully scripted...

All the parts are original to the drum with the exception of the strainer...A beautiful drum, well constructed, and a beautiful example of early American drum manufacturing out of Cleveland Ohio USA...
