ARREL, builders of modular mastering equipment, take their no-compromise ethos to the CL-122 dual parametric EQ with
- single-stage parallel EQ filter design developed by Livio Argentini for minimum phase interference and ultimate signal integrity – this is the same topology as used in Argentini's 9000€ LA-117 modular mastering EQ!
- fully parametric with overlapping frequency ranges and continuous Q
- mastering-grade bandwidth way beyond audio range for complete reproduction of any signal: linear response +/-1db from 5Hz to 200 kHz (10x the industry standard – this is not a typo).
- very low distortion (<0.003% THD), ultra-low noise
- Supreme resolution and preservation of detail as well as complete reproduction of natural dynamics – all the while being highly flexible, yet super musical: this EQ is a perfect complement to the concept of capturing complex sound sources beyond just their sweet spots.
- it reproduced a perfect square wave up to 20 kHz – this means it doesn't smear any transients as many tube and transformer-heavy EQs do
- true bypass per channel (the LEDs light up when in bypass mode)
- handbuilt
230V! Not switchable!
Don't be mislead by the pristine specs: it's transformational. In low increments it provides "invisible", highly naturalistic correction. Yet as you dial in settings above -/+3db, this is a gripping EQ that can reshape a track's entire aesthetics. The absence of slew limiting effects even at extreme boosts can be a double edged sword: if you lift your high end with 5db, every single detail gets lifted. This has the capacity to be 'harsh' too if required – with 14db on continuous controls this lifts / cuts like a resonant filter. I've achieved great mix buss results in combination with a vari mu limiter (the VT7). Mid bands: Instruments can be zoomed in and effectively "re-panned" by cutting in one channel while boosting in the other.
The Low band is a 'to die for' highlight. Few EQs I have experience can dial in bass definition so convincingly. In a shoot-out test I did, this was beating pretty much all my other EQ's low end across a wide range of sources. Only my Massive Passive could replicate something similar – a unit at 3x the price. It's a quite unique piece and there aren't many things to compare it to due to its proprietary topology. Must be heard to be believed.
Cosmetics: great overall condition. Some light marks from handling. See pictures.
