About This Listing

This is a very special sitar. Made for me by Radhey Shyam Sharma from aged salvaged teak! The difference in sound and volume between teak and tun (mahogany) sitars is noticeable and depends very much on the construction, aging and playing over time. The sound of this professional sitar created from well seasoned teak is more like an older vintage teak sitar.

This sitar includes top tumba made of gourd (not wood) and can be played with or without it. This sitar is made entirely within Radhey Shyam Sharma's shop in Varanasi as all their best sitars are made. It has three-dimensional carvings finely detailed that rival the best Kanai Lal sitars of the past. Natural inlaid materials throughout with an open jawari and easy action, lotus garland design on the tabli. Radhey Shyam also uses a sound hole in the top of the neck which produces more volume. It has floral main pegs with hardwood sympathetics with modern style sympathetic grommets. Radhey's teak sitars project well and have a sound and playability that equal the quality of workmanship you see here. This sitar was personally selected by me and finished to my specs and air shipped to me. A remarkable instrument from a great maker! Comes with hardshell case.

Note: this sitar is new. I love Indian music and bought it thinking I would learn to play. That has not happened. I continue to play guitar and harmonium and the sitar sits in its case. So I offer if for sale. Rain City Music offers these when they are available at $2200 + shipping.
