Rogers Super 10, XP-10 1980s - Natural Maple
1981–1984 Rogers XP-10 SuperTen — 6.5x14 — Natural Maple — Made in USA
Rogers USA Big R badge, serial number 102587. Ten-ply all North American maple shell, no reinforcement rings. Ten Beavertail lugs with the factory felt gaskets. Swiv-O-Matic throw-off and butt. Internal tone control. Evans Level 360 batter and Evans 300 Hazy snare side.
Here’s the story on this drum. Rogers introduced the SuperTen in 1972 as a chrome-over-steel snare and quit building wood snares the same year. When wood came back in 1981, the SuperTen got a wood shell for the first time — a thick ten-ply Keller maple shell that didn’t need rings — and from then until the Fullerton factory closed in July 1984, every wood snare Rogers made was natural maple. This is one of them. The 8x14 is what usually turns up; the 6.5 is the one that doesn’t.
Craig Krampf was the face of this generation of Rogers. Gina Schock of the Go-Go’s had a 6.5x14 SuperTen built for her at the factory in 1983. And the Rogers name itself was built by Buddy Rich and Louie Bellson a generation before.
The shell is dense and the tuning range is wide — fat and dry tuned low, and it cracks when you crank it. The snare beds are cut deeper than the old wood Dyna-Sonics, so it plays with regular wires and no fuss.
Musician grade. Shell is straight and round, edges are clean, throw-off and tone control work as they should, nothing to fix. Set it up and play it. The natural lacquer has small chips and pock marks around the shell where the finish has flaked over forty years — cosmetic, stable, and all shown in the photos. Light pitting on the tone control knob.
$675 plus $50 shipping in the lower 48. Local pickup preferred in Maplewood, Minnesota.
