Restored Knight KN-2285 3-Way Speakers (Featuring Matched 1976 Utah Drivers)

Fully serviced, future-proofed, and cosmetically updated by Upstate Vintage Speaker Lab.

The Restoration Includes:

  • 1976 Factory-Original Utah Drivers: Internal inspection verified a fully matched, highly collectible component suite built during the first week of January 1976. All three drivers—the 12" woofer, 8" midrange, and compression-style tweeter—carry matching Electronic Industries Association (EIA) source stamps (328601), certifying them as authentic American-built drivers from the renowned Utah Loudspeaker Company.
  • Woofer Tinsel Lead Repair: The flexible tinsel voice coil leads on both 12-inch Utah woofers were inspected due to intermittent signal dropouts. The fractured, oxidized connections near the cone pass-through points were micro-soldered, reinforced, and re-insulated to restore full mechanical flexibility and perfect signal continuity.
  • Cloth Surround Re-doping: The original factory inverted cloth surrounds on the woofers were cleaned and treated with fresh acoustic sealant. This redoping ensures stable mechanical compliance and long-term suspension stability for the bass reflex system.
  • Crossover Network Upgrade: The factory crossover networks were pulled and tested. The original failing 8µF and 4µF electrolytic capacitors were removed and replaced with high-tolerance film capacitors, restoring the factory crossover slopes and driver integration to original specification.
  • Frequency Control Service: The rear high-frequency level adjustment potentiometers were thoroughly flushed and cleaned with DeoxIT contact cleaner to eliminate dead spots, remove oxidation, and ensure clean signal routing to the midranges and tweeters.
  • Grille & Badge Restoration: The iconic woven vintage grille cloths were pulled and subjected to a deep aesthetic extraction to clear half a century of environmental dust and grime without altering the fabric tension. Both missing or damaged factory grille badges were replaced with premium vintage-correct replicas.
  • Cabinet & Veneer Correction: The premium walnut veneer enclosures were deep-cleaned to remove surface residue. The wood panels were treated with Howard Restor-A-Finish to blend out minor surface imperfections and enrich the natural book-matched grain pattern, followed by a coat of Howard Feed-N-Wax to condition the wood and provide a low-luster satin glow.
  • 80-Hour Lab Soak Test: Every speaker undergoes a strict "burn-in" to ensure new capacitors are fully settled and the system is mechanically and electronically stable before being offered for sale.

The Result: My 40 years of component-level experience ensures you are receiving a "bullet-proofed" pair of speakers that sound—and look—better than the day they left the factory. This pair provides the warm, punchy, highly efficient, and deeply musical mid-century presentation that premium American Utah drivers are celebrated for.

The Audition: I encourage you to test them in the Lab. I can demo them on my reference system with instant A/B switching so you can compare them to other restored pairs.

Investment & Value: The price reflects a professional restoration that generic marketplace listings cannot offer.

Performance: Premium components and finishes matching or exceeding original factory tolerances.

Peace of Mind: Professional bench time and a 30-day limited warranty.

Provenance: 80-hour lab certification and documentation of the work performed. As a retired enthusiast, my focus is on the preservation of audio equipment. I absorb the testing and acquisition costs to extend the operational lifespan of these systems.
