Restored Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) DM1400 Speakers with Custom Stands

Fully serviced, future-proofed, and cosmetically updated by Upstate Vintage Speaker Lab.

The Restoration Includes:

  • Crossover Network Upgrade: The intricate crossover networks—including the factory APOC (Audio Protective Overload Circuit) protection systems—were pulled and tested. Degraded original electrolytic capacitors that had drifted outside of factory tolerance were removed. The network was rebuilt using a combination of high-tolerance MPT film capacitors and premium non-polar electrolytic capacitors (NPEs) to restore the precise factory crossover points and ensure long-term stability.
  • Custom Stand Restomod & Adapter Plate Fabrication: One original factory stand column was missing from this pair, and the original top speaker adapter plates were entirely ruined. To return these monitors to their correct orientation, a complete matching system was engineered and built in the Lab:
  • Custom Adapter Plates: Replacement top mounting plates were custom-fabricated from solid pine. The plates were precision-routed with a clean profile to match the cabinet footprints, pre-drilled to ensure precise structural anchoring, primed, and finished in satin black.
  • Restomodded Stands: A set of heavy-duty replacement vintage pillars and bases was sourced and modified to fit the application. The bases and top plates were refinished in a durable satin black, while the vertical upright columns were treated in satin espresso to seamlessly complement the factory brown grilles.
  • Terminal & Hardware Service: The original rear terminal posts and factory driver mounting screws were removed and processed in a heated ultrasonic bath to clear surface oxidation. The hardware was then restored using a multi-stage rotary tumbling process: first, a wet tumble in a polymer pyramid media to strip surface rust and deep oxidation, followed by a 48-hour dry tumble in walnut shell media to achieve a mirror-like finish.
  • Cabinet "Tuxedo" Refinishing: The old, water-damaged finish on the top, bottom, and side panels was chemically and mechanically stripped down to bare wood. Severe water ring stains were treated and removed using oxalic acid. The panels were hand-sanded, stained with Minwax Dark Walnut, and sealed with Watco Danish Oil and Howard Feed-N-Wax. The original factory finish on the front baffles and cabinet rears was left intact, creating a clean two-tone appearance.
  • Baffle Structural & Cosmetic Detailing: To accentuate the cabinet lines, the decorative channel running around the perimeter of the front baffle and the inner lips of the driver cutouts were blacked out.
  • 80-Hour Lab Soak Test: Every speaker undergoes a strict "burn-in" to ensure new capacitors are fully settled and the system is mechanically and electronically stable before being offered for sale.

The Result: My 40 years of component-level experience ensures you are receiving a "bullet-proofed" pair of speakers that sound—and look—better than the day they left the factory. This pair provides the highly precise, low-distortion, revealing acoustic signature that vintage British Bowers & Wilkins studio-grade monitors are globally revered for.

The Audition: I encourage you to test them in the Lab. I can demo them on my reference system with instant A/B switching so you can compare them to other restored pairs.

Investment & Value: The price reflects a professional restoration that generic marketplace listings cannot offer.

  • Performance: Premium components and finishes matching or exceeding original factory tolerances.
  • Peace of Mind: Professional bench time and a 30-day limited warranty.
  • Provenance: 80-hour lab certification and documentation of the work performed. As a retired enthusiast, my focus is on the preservation of audio equipment. I absorb the testing and acquisition costs to extend the operational lifespan of these systems.
