A beautiful vintage Roland SRE-555 Chorus Echo, made in Japan and dating to approximately April 1984.
This unit was professionally serviced by a reputable repair shop in Japan before listing. We wanted it ready for its next owner to enjoy, with the maintenance already taken care of.
The service included:
- Capacitor replacement
- Demagnetization
- Roller adjustment
- Cleaning of electrical contacts throughout the unit
It has been carefully inspected, adjusted, and tested, and all functions are working perfectly. I also recorded a demo video of this exact unit so you can hear it and see its functions in action.
The SRE-555 is one of the most sophisticated tape echo machines Roland ever made. Essentially the rackmount version of the RE-501, it combines the unmistakable character of genuine tape echo with lush analog chorus, spring reverb, and sound-on-sound recording.
What makes this machine special is how beautifully these effects work together.
The tape echo has that warm, slightly unpredictable movement that makes real tape machines so enjoyable. The analog chorus adds a wonderful sense of width and depth, while the spring reverb gives everything a natural, spacious quality. Combining them opens up a whole world of atmospheric sounds, from subtle vintage textures to swirling ambient soundscapes.
It's an especially inspiring machine for guitar, synthesizers, electric piano, dub, ambient music, and experimental recording.
At over 40 years old, the SRE-555 still offers something that modern digital emulations can't quite replace. There's a certain magic in hearing the tape moving, turning the controls, and feeling the sound change beneath your fingers.
For me, that hands-on experience is a big part of the appeal of these old Roland machines. They're not just effects processors. They're instruments in their own right.
This particular unit is also in very nice cosmetic condition for its age, making it an especially appealing example of this classic Roland machine.
An English-language maintenance manual is included, along with a spare tape loop to help you care for the machine in the years ahead.
At Crossroad Store Japan, we've been selling vintage Roland tape echo machines to players around the world for years. We understand how important proper servicing, careful testing, and secure packing are when purchasing a vintage machine from overseas.
If this will be your first Roland tape echo, we'd love to help make it a great experience. This SRE-555 has received the attention it deserves and is ready for its next chapter with you.

Condition
Professionally serviced in Japan and fully functional.
All functions have been tested and are working perfectly, including tape echo, analog chorus, spring reverb, and sound-on-sound.
Cosmetically, this unit is in Very Good vintage condition for its age.
It has been well preserved and retains a very attractive overall appearance.
There may be minor signs of age and previous use, as expected from a genuine vintage machine dating to 1984, but the overall cosmetic condition is very nice.
Please examine all photos carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
