The legendary effects pedal, the Fuzz Face. Used by legendary artists, and as evidenced by the numerous reissue and inspired models produced, its sound remains in demand in a wide variety of settings.
Based on the POT date, this unit is estimated to have been shipped around 1972, but it's an interesting piece as the casing and circuitry retain many features from earlier periods. Consumable parts such as the switches, volume potentiometer, back panel, control knobs, and battery snap have been replaced, indicating it has been well-used. Due to deterioration of the screw mounts on the back panel, it now opens and closes with Velcro.
The pedal features two Telefunken BC108C transistors (one of which appears to be replaced). The gold Sprague capacitors are also a nice touch, as they are an older specification. It has a thick, punchy tone characteristic of the silicon era, and as you turn up the "Fuzz," a roughness and grittiness accompanied by harmonics gradually comes to the forefront, while the thickness from the low to mid frequencies remains solid. With chords, there is a fuzzy feeling that pushes the sound forward, and with single notes, a granular distortion comes to the forefront—a character that is truly typical of silicon Fuzz Faces of this era. It also responds to volume adjustments on the guitar, so you can enjoy not only the rough fuzz sound when it's turned all the way up, but also how the distortion unravels when it's turned down a bit, making it a great unit to own.
Parts replaced: Volume potentiometer, one transistor, switch, back panel, control knob, battery snap. Accessories: None.
