This is probably my favorite mic of all time. I have owned several U47s and they are beautiful but this is a kind of smooth silk that nothing yet has touched. I recorded the whole last album on this mic and can share those songs on Spotify or iTunes if anyone would like to hear.
I am also realizing I am not using this mic enough and just sitting on it isn't quite the right game plan for me - I would rather it be used and heard in the world more.
I bought this from Paul Allen's studio Vulcan studios in Seattle when they were liquidating their gear and it's truly hand picked, top of the line mic. I also had custom built a lambskin box built for it with felt lining shown in the photos by a custom mic box maker.
Some nerdy details:
This is the Neumann M49b. Before the M49, a different pattern meant a different microphone. The U47 could flip between cardioid and omni. Herbert Großkopf at Northwest German Broadcasting patented a continuous remote pattern in 1949, omni through cardioid to figure-8, and Neumann built it. The M49b from 1957 uses the BV11 transformer, about 4 dB more output, a lower noise floor, an internal cardioid switch, a Telefunken AC701, and the slanted grille.
Power supply, cables, everything is vintage mint and works well. I will include the mount as well - all original.
