The Boss EX-4 Effects Expander Multi Effects Pedal is made for players who like the flexibility of a multi-effects processor but don't necessarily want to replace the pedalboard they've already built. With 120 Boss effects onboard and the ability to run up to four simultaneously, the EX-4 can fill whatever gaps are left in your rig, whether that's an extra drive, modulation, delay, reverb, bass effect, or something more specialized like Slow Gear or Slicer. Manual mode gives you stompbox-style operation, while Memory mode and 128 user memories make it just as practical for players who need complete sounds ready for different songs or sets.

The routing is where the EX-4 becomes especially useful. Effects can be reordered in standard serial chains or arranged in more involved series, parallel, and wet/dry configurations, and you can even run multiple instances of the same effect. Four audio jacks support mono or stereo operation, with two configurable as an effects loop so your existing pedals can become part of the EX-4 signal chain. Gear Suite speeds up sound building with ready-to-play effect setups and saved parameter configurations, while the 2.4-inch color display, dedicated FX buttons, and two assignable footswitches keep editing and live control manageable without taking up a huge amount of board space.

MIDI I/O, external footswitch and expression support, global EQ, two noise suppressors, foot volume, and divider/mixer utilities give you plenty of room to build a more sophisticated rig around it. Boss also includes the PSA-S power adapter, so it's ready to integrate without adding another power requirement to your shopping list. We see the EX-4 as a particularly practical solution when you already have a few pedals you don't want to give up, but regularly find yourself wishing there were three or four more effects on the board.
