For sale is a beautiful Houtwinkel handmade baritone ukulele, featuring a superb tonewood combination of sinker redwood and figured Claro walnut.

The sinker redwood top gives this baritone a wonderfully rich, responsive voice with warmth and depth, while the Claro walnut back and sides add clarity and definition. The result is a big, resonant baritone sound that remains articulate rather than muddy. Redwood and walnut is an especially compelling pairing on a baritone, and this instrument shows why.

The craftsmanship is fantastic. The instrument features a sinker redwood top, figured Claro walnut back and sides, Honduran mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, modified fan bracing, slotted headstock, geared tuners, and side sound port. Beautiful handmade mosaic wood inlays appear in the rosette, fret markers, and decorative back strip.

The walnut on the back is gorgeous, with plenty of movement and figure, while the very tight grain of the redwood soundboard is striking in person. The natural wood appointments give it a sophisticated custom-luthier aesthetic without excessive ornamentation.

This is a true handmade luthier instrument, not a production baritone. It has the warmth and low-end presence you want from a baritone, but with excellent note separation, sustain and responsiveness. It’s particularly beautiful for fingerstyle and chord melody.
