When a guitarist wants the character of a late-'50s Les Paul without the compromises and extraordinary cost that accompany an original, this used Gibson Custom Shop 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue is built to bring that experience into a modern player's hands. The original 1958 Les Paul Standard arrived at a pivotal moment in Gibson history, introducing the sunburst finish that would define the model's most celebrated era while retaining details that distinguish it from the better-known 1959 examples. Gibson Custom recreates those characteristics here with a lightweight one-piece mahogany body, hide-glue-fitted two-piece plain maple top, chunky neck profile, narrow/tall frets, and historically inspired plastics and hardware.
Where a 1959 Reissue often attracts attention for figured maple and its particular neck carve, the 1958 Reissue deliberately tells a slightly different story. Its plain maple top reflects the character of many original '58 Standards, allowing the grain and individual personality of the wood to take precedence over dramatic figuring. Beneath it sits a one-piece lightweight mahogany back, while the mahogany neck is joined with a long tenon and hide glue in keeping with Gibson Custom's historically focused construction. The 50s Rounded Medium C profile gives the neck the substantial feel and bending leverage associated with late-'50s examples, while the 12" radius Indian rosewood fingerboard and 22 Historic Gibson Narrow/Tall frets complete the vintage-minded playing surface.
Its voice comes from a pair of unpotted Custombucker Alnico III humbuckers, designed to capture the openness, dynamics, and harmonic complexity associated with early Gibson PAF-style pickups. They are paired with CTS 500K audio-taper potentiometers and paper-in-oil capacitors, giving the traditional two-volume, two-tone layout plenty of range for shaping everything from articulate cleans and woody neck-pickup sounds to biting bridge tones and saturated overdrive. That combination makes the R8 equally at home in blues, classic rock, hard rock, roots music, southern rock, and heavier styles where a responsive humbucker guitar can move naturally between rhythm and lead work.
Details such as the no-wire ABR-1 bridge, lightweight aluminum stop bar, Kluson Single Line/Single Ring tuners, nylon nut, aged cellulose nitrate trapezoid inlays, Royalite and cellulose acetate butyrate plastics, and nickel hardware complete the period-focused presentation. The VOS treatment adds a subtle vintage patina without the extensive simulated wear of an aged finish, allowing the Iced Tea Burst and understated plain maple top to remain the visual focus. Rather than simply recreating a generic "Burst," this Custom Shop model concentrates on what made 1958 distinctive, resulting in a Les Paul that connects the construction, feel, and straightforward visual character of the first sunburst Standards with the demands of a guitar meant to be played today. Available now at Haggerty’s Music, this guitar ships with a Lifton Reissue 5-Latch Hardshell Case.
