1960A 4×12 Cabinet – 1972 – Celestion G12M T1221 Pulsonic Greenbacks
A fantastic 1972 Marshall 1960A angled 4×12, loaded with four period Celestion G12M T1221 Greenbacks, all retaining their desirable original Pulsonic 102 3 cones.
This is classic early-'70s Marshall specification. The T1221 is the legendary 25-watt, 16-ohm G12M with a 75Hz bass resonance, and is arguably the speaker most closely associated with the classic Marshall 4×12 sound.
All four speakers retain their original Celestion labels and Pulsonic cones. Two chassis carry EF date stamps and the remaining two EG. There is no visible day number within the stamps; incomplete and reversed month/year date-code formats are known on Celestions from this period, and the codes are entirely consistent with 1972 production.
The original 102 3 Pulsonic cones are particularly important here. These early cones are a major part of the character for which vintage Greenbacks are prized — warm and woody through the midrange, with a controlled bottom end, softened top end and that wonderfully musical compression as they begin to work.
With four of them in a proper early-'70s Marshall enclosure, the result is exactly what you'd hope for: articulate at lower levels and increasingly rich, complex and aggressive as the volume comes up. Paired with a Plexi or early metal-panel JMP, it's one of those combinations that explains why these old cabinets remain so sought after.
Condition & Originality
The cabinet is in good cosmetic condition for its age, with the expected collection of scuffs, snags, small tears and general signs of use accumulated over more than five decades.
Importantly, the original period grille cloth remains in place. It has certainly had a life, with a number of smaller tears and one more substantial tear visible to the front. These areas have been repaired at some point in the cabinet's history.
We have deliberately left the cloth as it is rather than replacing it. For a cabinet of this age, we'd much rather retain the genuine original material — repairs, battle scars and all — than make it cosmetically perfect with modern replacement cloth.
Internally, the cabinet presents very nicely, retaining its period construction and the complete set of four vintage Celestion Greenbacks.
