The Lore of the "Black Goldtop" Back in 1957, the rules were simple: If you wanted a black Les Paul, you bought the all-mahogany, gold-hardware "Black Beauty" Custom. If you bought a Standard, you got a Goldtop. Case closed.

Except... Gibson rarely turned down a paying customer with a special request. A tiny, single-digit handful of rebels defied the catalog and special-ordered their '57 Standards bathed in Ebony lacquer instead of metallic gold. This Tom Doyle "TIME MACHINE" Relic Les Paul is an authentic & faithful aged recreation of an ultra-rare, rule-breaking factory-black 1957 Les Paul Standard platform. This one-of-a-kind hand aged masterpiece features Tom Doyle's Doyle Coils TRU-CLONES PAF Humbuckers, Real '59 Holy Grail Harness, aged nickel architecture, high-contrast cream appointments, and an exquisite vintage hand aged Lifton case. Every single part, piece & widget has been painstakingly pored over, aged, relic'd, worn down, and antiqued to replicate a ghost that technically wasn't supposed to exist.

While Gibson’s Les Paul guitars peaked in the fifties, the man with his name on the headstock was never entirely satisfied with his guitar, and even less so, the pickups. Back in '57, the catalog had walls; custom order sheets had trapdoors for the fearless.

In the mid-sixties, Les met the man who would become his lifelong friend/guitar tech/engineer, Tom Doyle. When Les broke it, Tom fixed it. Decades in the trenches together cracked the code on what makes vintage timber and wire sing or choke. The “TIME MACHINE” series isn't a museum piece behind glass; it’s the hot-rodded ghost Gibson should have built for the rebel who slipped past the front desk.

Starting life as a post-2014 Gibson Custom Shop Historic (hide glue, thin nitro, strict under-9lb weight/resonance ceiling), every millimeter of finish is stripped, then beaten and blessed with proprietary heat, cold, and vibration conditioning. Lacquer checks like a Tucson winter; metal oxidizes like spilled draft beer; the Lifton case looks like it fell out of a tour van in 1958.
