1970s Rhodes Mark I Stage 88, serial 44193, rebuilt in 1977 by Buz Watson. His Fender Rhodes Piano Service card is still stuck to the wood right next to the factory serial plate under the lid, hand-dated 9-10-77 and marked "Pinned / Rebuild." Buz did QC at the Fender Rhodes factory in Fullerton until 1972 and left over their quality standards — Vintage Vibe has a write-up on him if you want to look him up.

When he did the piano he told me he'd worked out his own modified key action that Fender never adopted, and he put it in mine. That's his account as he gave it to me and I can't document it beyond that, but the result is an 88 that plays considerably better than a stock Mark I — even, responsive, none of the heavy uneven feel these can have.

All 88 notes sound — no dead notes, no buzzes, no sticky keys. The output is clean and quiet, both the volume and bass boost pots work smoothly without crackling, and it records beautifully straight into an interface.

Cosmetically it's honest: scuffed tolex, tarnished name rail, slight key yellowing. There are two extra holes drilled in the faceplate — at one time this was rewired as a split instrument, with the bottom octave and a half running as a Fender keyboard bass on its own output and the rest of the keyboard going to a separate amp. That hardware is long gone and the holes are purely cosmetic.

Comes with the chrome legs, the sustain pedal and rod, and the top lid. Audio clips attached, including a full chromatic walk-down so you can hear every note. It's about 145 lb / 66 kg.

I'm the original owner — I played professionally and had it on the road with me for about seven years, then played it intermittently after that. Always stored indoors. I'm 75 now and clearing out my equipment, so it's time for it to go to somebody who'll play it.
