1990 - MGP 9004 Series 9000 Guitar Preamp – Made in England

A seldom-seen piece of early-'90s Marshall rack history, the MGP 9004 Guitar Preamp was introduced around 1990 as part of Marshall’s Series 9000 range.

Produced shortly before the arrival of the JMP-1, which would go on to become Marshall’s best-known rack preamp, the 9004 represents an interesting transitional period when rack systems were becoming an increasingly important part of professional guitar rigs.

The 9004 is an all-solid-state, two-channel design with completely independent Lead and Rhythm channels. The Lead channel features Gain, Volume and three-band EQ, covering everything from mild breakup through to considerably more saturated Marshall overdrive, while the Rhythm channel has its own Volume and three-band EQ.

A master section provides overall volume and an adjustable Dry/FX Mix, with the rear-panel connections allowing external effects to be incorporated into a stereo rack setup.

This example is in excellent condition for its age, with the original black Series 9000 faceplate presenting particularly well. There are only minor signs of use, as you'd expect from a piece of rack equipment now around 35 years old.

The MGP 9004 has become one of the more obscure Marshall products from this period. Overshadowed by the valve and MIDI-equipped JMP-1 that followed, these don't appear particularly often today and make an interesting addition to a Marshall collection or a period-correct late-'80s/early-'90s rack setup.
